Seeking a highly skilled Lead Medical Supply Technician position at the Jerry L. Pettis VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. The position is in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) and requires an expert in the Decontamination, Preparation, Sterilization, and Case Cart section of SPS. The ideal candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of decontamination and sterilization equipment and its operation.
Duties
The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Uses knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
Develops, monitors, and revises SPS education programs for transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage of Reusable Medical Devices for the medical center.
Reads and interprets written procedures and select appropriate action to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Creates learning plans that meet the needs of individuals and specific groups.
Evaluates and documents the results of learning activities. Participates in tracking and trending educational data.
Processes and sterilizes a wide variety of instrumentation, to include implant devices, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, and ensures that they are quarantined for the required time post sterilization per regulations with a detailed knowledge of complex surgical instruments used in operating room and clinic settings.
Develops and provides training to employees to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations and infection control procedures and principles.
Identifies the training needs of SPS employees, develops training plans, and arranges training to meet the needs of employees.
Possesses interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
Inspects to verify that all instrumentation is disassembled to the simplest form.
Performs daily quality assurance checks on all RMD processed before leaving the department.
Assures all quality assurance measures are being followed and documentation of such records are being maintained. Ability to assemble specialty operating room and clinical case carts for surgical procedures.
Retrieves doctor's preference card and accurately build a case cart for surgical procedure.
Validates accuracy of completed case carts to ensure no missing / wrong RMD.
Leads individuals, management priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Evaluates the employee compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This includes posting and maintaining current documents of SOP, Competencies, and Information for Use (IFU) documents regularly.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-08 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
In addition to the experience above, must be able to demonstrate the following KSAs:
Ability to read and interpret written procedures and select appropriate action in order to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing to ensure staff compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Assignment: The Lead MST at this level oversees a work team that includes at least one MST position that is above the full performance. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even distribution of the workload. When necessary, revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to perform decontamination of scopes and instrumentation in the work area. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews or spot checks scope processing work to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions (e.g., work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines). Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of scope medical equipment, material and instrumentation. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work-related activities, policies, procedures and goals.

Physical Requirements:
This job involves working in various settings such as decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation), and other departments within the medical facility/campus. The employee may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lit. There is a possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The job requires standing and walking throughout the entire workday, as well as frequent bending and lifting of packages, which may occasionally weigh up to 50 pounds. The job also requires good dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembling, and assembling instrumentation
