Seeking a highly skilled Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer at the Jerry L. Pettis VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. The position is in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) and requires an expert in the Decontamination, Preparation, Sterilization, and Case Cart sections of SPS. The ideal candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of decontamination and sterilization equipment and its operation.
Duties
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Provides initial orientation and continuing on-the-job training for new and established SPS employees.
Develops, monitors, and revises SPS education programs for transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage of Reusable Medical Devices for the medical center.
Develops and provides training to employees to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations and infection control procedures and principles.
Identifies the training needs of SPS employees, develops training plans, and arranges training to meet the needs of employees.
Creates learning plans that meet the needs of individuals and specific groups. Evaluate and document the results of learning activities. Participates in tracking and trending educational data.
Develops instructional plans and training based on established learning objectives and requirements that are provided in the manufacturer's instructions, VHA directives and memorandums.
Evaluates the employee compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This includes posting and maintaining current documents of SOP, Competencies, and Information for Use (IFU) documents regularly.
Develops, monitors, and revises SPS educational programs for both new and existing employees.
Maintains current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of RMD that are appropriate for this position.
Demonstrates knowledge of the reporting procedures involving safety issues relating to patients.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work. or
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position. or
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. c. Certification. None. d. Grandfathering Provision. All MSTs that are employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:

All MSTs that are employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. GS-07 Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Knowledge of SPS and Infection Prevention regulations.
Knowledge of procedures and/or operations in training developed for, and operations of SPS functions for both new and existing staff.
Ability to manage integrated training programs as it relates to sterile processing procedures.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or other software programs in order to complete reports and develop skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and management officials in regards to sterile processing procedures.
Grade Determinations: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation), and other departments within the medical facility/campus. The employee may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lit. There is a possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The job requires standing and walking throughout the entire workday, as well as frequent bending and lifting of packages, which may occasionally weigh up to 50 pounds. The job also requires good dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembling, and assembling instrumentation.
