Duties
The Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails) works under the direction of the
Maintenance Worker Supervisor (Trails). This position performs and leads lower
graded workers in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, (re)construction, and
stabilization of Park trails and related public use facilities throughout Saguaro
National Park and other park units in the Southwest as well as nationally.
Incumbent is principally involved in leading the daily work of a 5 to12-person trail
crew. Leadership responsibilities will include explaining and laying out specific
phases of projects, ensuring quality standards are met, assigning tasks to
subordinates, maintaining safe worksites, setting the pace and completing work
on schedule. Incumbent must possess a broad knowledge of the specialized
tools, skills and techniques associated with leading a trail crew in trail
maintenance and (re)construction, including general trail maintenance practices,
masonry and log work. The work is outdoors and is extremely physically
demanding. Work will also include moving a variety of materials (e.g., stone,
logs, fill, etc.) to worksites, maintaining and (re)constructing erosion controlling
structures, backfilling materials behind erosion control structures, hauling
materials, rehabilitating project sites, cleaning drainages, installing signs,
transplanting native cactus, and brushing trail segments. This position will be
required to operate and maintain a variety of power tools and hand tools such as
Pionjars, cutoff saws, generators, rebar cutters, chainsaws, shovels, rockbars,
picks, crosscut saws, single-jack hammers, levels, chisels, tape measures, etc.
This position will require the incumbent to possess the knowledge to lead others
in the safe operations of rigging systems, including the proper set up, operation
and maintenance of rigging systems and all of the components associated with it.
This position may also perform general maintenance duties (such as painting,
electrical, plumbing, etc), assisting the animal packer in loading/unloading and
caring for animals, and constructing and maintaining Park boundary fencing as
assigned. Work is performed in both front country and backcountry locations.
Backcountry work may require living and working out of a wilderness camp for up
to 10 days at a time. Incumbent must pass a respirator fit test and will be
required to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator.
