This position is located at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) located in Tucson, AZ. This position is part of Engineering Service Line. The Maintenance Mechanic Leader position works under the direct supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor.
Duties
Duties include but limited to:
Serve as a leader and assist the supervisor in the operation, maintenance, repairs, testing and inspections of buildings and associated systems, including preventative maintenance, repairs, installations, alterations, and inspections.
Demonstrating proper work methods; Seeing to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
Lead and assist in the restoration and construction of buildings and associated systems, including large repairs, equipment moves and installation, alterations, data and electrical cable installations/terminations and upgrades, covered by the following trades: Carpenters, Painters, Electricians, HVAC, Plumbers, Telecommunication and Maintenance Mechanics at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.
Travels to any of six rural satellite clinics encompassing a 400 Sq mile area of Southern Arizona as work lead to support, monitor, and work beside a team in the modification, restoration or medical equipment installation needs necessary to support facility and equipment operations.
Assist the supervisor in planning the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis.
Planning and establishing overall leave schedule, determines training needs of subordinates, arranges for its accomplishments; developing performance standards; recommends to the Supervisor concerning formal appraisals of subordinate work performance.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 4:00 p.m.- 12:00 p.m.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The physical demands on the job are strenuous in respect that it is necessary to climb vertical ladders, work off pneumatic lifts, inside cramped spaces. The incumbent may be required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in awkward positions for prolonged periods. The incumbent handles and carries equipment, materials and tools weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Incumbent will be required to stoop, crawl, and climb over duct work and piping while working on equipment. Occasionally lifts and carries objects over ninety (90) pounds, with the assistance of others or lifting devices. The work can sometimes require strenuous physical exertion, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and in general have use of his/her limbs. He/she must visit all those areas where subordinates will be working for the purpose of instruction and/or inspection. The incumbent may routinely work around and be required to operate mobile heavy equipment and machinery.
