Temporary positions not-to exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is May-June but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2024

Duties

Major Duties Include: Assists with carpentry tasks in repairing and modifying wood components of historic structures. Uses power tools of the trade to make routine cuts, etc. Receives detailed assignments orally or through work orders, sketches, or basic blueprints. Selects proper tools to use; determines methods and techniques based on established practices and specific instructions. Accomplishes work in collaboration with other multidisciplinary preservation team members and assists in constructing support structures necessary to implement long-term and temporary preservation treatment and matching historic fabric. Cleans and prepares buildings, walls, trim, and floor surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, wire brushing or by the application of approved commercial paint removers. Assists in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of historic ruins and sites built of stone, brick, and mortar. Removes damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage stabilization and original fabric; lays stone and adobe blocks; implements prescribed preservation treatments; and records the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process. Physical Demands The physical effort required is considered heavy to moderate and requires lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifting or moving heavier items with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers. The incumbent is required to work while standing, stooping, bending, crouching and climbing in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and in all manners of environmental conditions. When working from a ladder or scaffolds, work involves reaching overhead, stretching or other awkward positions. Occasionally work is performed beneath buildings where the work area is cramped and dark, or work may be done from highly elevated platforms. Sometimes long hikes while carrying a backpack may be essential as is the possibility of technical climbing into some sites. Working Conditions: General work is done at prehistoric and historic structures and ruins throughout the park. Often these are in backcountry locations with difficult access that may require rappelling and the use of scaffold and ladder systems. The structures and ruins may be extremely deteriorated and structurally unsound, and therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and direct and of such nature that protective equipment and clothing such as hard hats, safety shoes, goggles, respirators, and ear protection are required, whether working indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, fumes, and hazards associated with power equipment or preservatives. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poisonous plants can be encountered. Assignments could involve working with hazardous materials, such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead-based products, etc. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation) without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of Materials Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Use of Measuring Instruments If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
