This position is located within the Division of Medical Services at Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ. Incumbent is a Supervisory Physician in the specialty area of Pathology. The incumbent serves as the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medical Director over Clinical Pathology and Lab Services at PIMC, and as a Staff Pathologist. The incumbent provides Medical Laboratory Director and Lab Consultant services for other service units and tribal programs in the Phoenix Area.

Duties

Reviews the medical practices and procedures and directs the activities of the Pathology and Laboratory department in accordance with the objectives of the Indian Health Service; administrative policies of the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service; established criteria of The Joint Commission (TJC), College of American Pathologist (CAP) and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB); and accepted national standards. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and coordinates the preparation of schedules for completion of work; Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees. Serves as Medical Laboratory Director or Lab Consultant for other IHS or tribal laboratories, as directed. Conduct field visits and off-site support as needed. Responsible for performing all frozen sections and providing the final diagnosis on subsequent specimens. Supervises the routine surgical specimens and makes sure there is a written consultation on all difficult and unusual specimens. Provides cytologic diagnosis on all GYN and non GYN cytology specimens. Ensures accuracy of diagnosis for all surgical, bone marrow, and cytology specimens.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): 1. Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical College; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. 2. Licensure: Applicant must possess a current, active, unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. 3. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., 1 year internship or the first year of a residency program in hospital or an institution accredited to such training. Graduate training programs include those internship, residency and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Residency Training involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-15: Completed 5 years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training ( i.e., work in the specialty area after residency). AND one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples include: Experience with management of pathology and lab services, clinical expertise in the full scope of pathology services and practicing direct patient care in their area of specialty. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification:In addition to the minimum requirements, the following certification is determined to be essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of a particular position. Applicants who do not meet a selective placement factor are ineligible for further consideration. (Must submit a copy with your resume). Current Board Certification in the physician's specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
