Duties

Patrol campgrounds to provide visitors with regulatory, safety, recreation, and orientation information. Perform maintenance on remote cabins, campgrounds, and other facilities. Monitor and maintain remote hiking trails. Operate pick-up truck on remote routes; operate off road vehicles; and conduct motorized/non-motorized river patrols. Support campground hosts in ferrying supplies to them and assist them with their campground projects. Assist in maintaining, cleaning, and inspecting facilities to include liter removal, routine trail maintenance, toilet cleaning, replacing toilet paper, etc.

Requirements

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
  • An applicant appointed to this position must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
  • May require a one year probationary period.
  • You may be required to carry a firearm or bear repellent spray in the performance of your duties. Any person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. For GS-05 Specialized Experience: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples which include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Park/Public lands facility maintenance and janitorial duties; 2) Front country or Backcountry visitor services; 3) forestry and/or fire prevention and fire suppression work in parks, recreation or conservation areas; and 4) management, assistant or program specialist work involving the development/implementation of protection, conservation, and/or management of park or similar operations. -OR- Education: Have successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology or other closely related subject pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. For GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples which include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Lead trail and kiosk construction and repair; 2) Repair and maintenance of small buildings in remote parks or recreation areas; 3) Educate the public on various policies and laws; 4) Assessment of safety hazards on public lands 5) Repairs of hand pumps, small landscape equipment, lawn mowers and hand tools 6) Use of All terrain vehicles, 4-wheel drive trucks, and trailer operations. 7) Work with and lead volunteers in day-to-day activities. -OR- Education: I have successfully completed (1) full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation, such as; natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology or other closely related subject pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. -OR- Superior Academic Achievement: (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Will be required to continually lift up to 50 pounds, do strenuous work, hike and work in rough terrain, and climb steep slopes. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration.
