Duties

Direct the full range of visitor center services at the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center to include informational services, facility maintenance, and safe/enjoyable recreation and educational experiences. Direct the interpretive programming from plans and development through delivery to a variety of audiences and oversee studies and surveys in support of interpretive programming and visitor services. Apply substantive knowledge to continually evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of interpretive programming and visitor services through visitor surveys and studies. Develop and deliver natural and cultural resource related interpretive programs and develop interpretive products using a wide range of media. Conduct patrols to assess and evaluate site traffic, environmental impacts, and visitor experience. Develop plans for safety of site visitors. Manage volunteers.

  • This position requires you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status. The incumbent is required to wear the uniform in accordance with applicable policies and be required to sign a condition of uniform wear statement.
  • An applicant appointed to this position must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
  • May require a one year probationary period.
  • This position requires regular and recurring on call work and work on evenings, weekends, holidays.
  • This position requires Basic First Aid and CPR Certification (or higher-level certification) and annual refresher courses. These may be obtained within 60 days of appointment.
  • Government housing is provided while located in Coldfoot, Alaska from May through September.
  • You may be required to carry a firearm or bear repellent spray in the performance of your duties. Any person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Serving as a park guide; developing and presenting interpretive talks; developing interpretive products such as pamphlets, displays, signage, or multimedia and web programs; assisting in the management of a visitor center or contact station; conducting visitor and resource use surveys; and analysis of visitor use of public lands and resources. OR Education: Have successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: May require strenuous physical activity to include walking, hiking, climbing, or riding in a four-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain. Lifts boxes and equipment up to 25 pounds. Work Environment: May be exposed to extreme variances in weather and terrain such as extreme cold (-40 degrees), rain, snow, wind, and natural hazards of a mountainous, arctic, and subarctic environment. May be exposed to large number of mosquitoes and other biting insects and wild animals such as moose and bears (grizzly and black bears).
