Duties
This position serves as the Science Communication Specialist in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs for Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks. The purpose of this position is to communicate about the science, research, resource management, and ecosystem issues managed by the South Florida Natural Resources Center and support the parks with internal and external communications.
Science Communication- Initiate and implement in-reach and out-reach learning opportunities for park staff and middle school to adult learners with a focus on research and promotion of a sense of stewardship. Provide and/or facilitate overall science education programs and activities for the local community, news media, visitors, schools, community groups, subject matter specialists, and special interest groups.
Visual Information Development- Develop a diverse range of accessible communication products to communicate the methods and findings of recent and current research projects for management, staff, cooperators, and visitors. Product examples include, but are not limited to, resource briefs, fact sheets, summaries of hot topics, overviews, newsletters, StoryMaps, brochures, field guides, audio clips, videos, interactive articles, and web pages. Maintain a sufficient working knowledge of new and emerging technologies and incorporate into products created.
Research Synthesis- Learn about park resources by researching primary and secondary documents, (published and unpublished), using State, regional and local archives and public and private repositories, as well as Government documents. Continue acquiring in-depth resource knowledge by participating in field-based research and monitoring efforts. Science topics include, but are not limited to, climate and environmental change, fire ecology, biodiversity, invasive species, wildlife, vegetation, air and water quality, cultural preservation, and visitor experience. Identify priority research topics and science issues to gather, analyze, and synthesize scientific information from research, monitoring, resources management actions, and other sources of information. Compile relevant and accurate research results from scientific literature, summary reports, and scientists/subject matter experts on park natural and cultural resources and issues for use by scientists, managers, park staff, cooperators, and visitors.
Collaboration and Partnerships- Participate with NPS staff, other agencies, park partners, and organizations to provide expertise on research results and to develop and implement educational opportunities and communication products. Coordinate the integration of the science communication and engagement program with all divisions at Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks, the South Florida Natural Resource Center, other NPS units, the NPS Caribbean Inventory & Monitoring Network, and the national Natural Resource Stewardship and Science network.
Administration- Coordinate planning in the science communication and engagement program for the short, mid, and long-term outlook by identifying program improvements, recommending methods to target and attract untapped audiences, developing schedules for special events, and responding to public inquiries. Evaluate effectiveness of educational outreach and use this information to plan changes in future programs.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: translating and communicating complex scientific information to the general public; assisting with and/or conducting public outreach and education on science topics; creating print or digital media products to summarize scientific articles or data; managing social media, website, and digital communications; representing an agency or organization to the media and public through interviews and community engagement. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take education percentage. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: translating and communicating complex scientific information to various audiences including media, stakeholders, and general public; conducting public outreach and education on science topics; creating print or digital media products to summarize scientific articles or data; managing social media, website, and digital communications; serving as a spokesperson for an agency and/or representing an agency to the media and public through interviews and community engagement; communicating sensitive or controversial content; developing strategic communication plans; providing guidance and training others to communicate on complex science topics; writing and editing journal articles, technical reports, briefing papers on natural resource topics. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree. You must include transcripts.
