This position maintains anesthesiology supplies and equipment, sets up anesthetizing locations and operates, monitors, and collects data from anesthesia related equipment. It is also responsible for equipment preventive maintenance and/or repair. The incumbent at this level will exercise minimal independent judgment in anesthesia technology duties.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Completes and maintains required competencies for staff anesthesia tech department. Mentors and assists other anesthesia technicians on technical procedures. Responsible for, in conjunction with Chief CRNA and Section Chief of Anesthesia, routine, equal assignment of work duties for anesthesia tech department. Involved in selection of staff, recommendation of awards, and when appropriate, disciplinary action in conjunction with immediate supervisor Chief CRNA and Section Chief of Anesthesiology. Participates as a valued member of equipment development decisions. Has potential involvement in reviewing service contracts, vendor agreements, and equipment expenditures. Responsible for maintaining records of preventative maintenance in anesthesia equipment. Has knowledge of JAHCO and VA national safety goals related to patient care. Supports anesthesia providers for certain anesthetic procedures such as holding the patient in position for spinal, epidural, and regional anesthesia and hands out equipment during intubation. Takes vital signs when anesthesia providers are not able to do so because of their sterile procedures. Sets up breathing circuits, O2 transport and emergency ventilation systems. Provides assistance to other units such as the PACU and ICU to acquire needed items in acute situations. Responds to the requests for various errands for Anesthesiology. Picks up and delivers supplies as needed within the OR area and runs short errands within the Medical Center. Provides a safe environment for patients and staff. Cleans and inspects all anesthesia machines located in the OR and the PACU. Restocks breathing circuits, masks, and EKG pads. Replaces discharged batteries for the battery-operated instruments. Orders supplies, pin requests, maintains inventory. Performs periodic service and calibration of monitors in the OR (EKG, blood pressure, CO2 analyzer, oxygen meter, temperature probe, anesthetic gas analyzer) in collaboration with biomedical engineering. Assists with quality assurance program for the Anesthesiology Service Laboratory including the review, plotting of daily results, and documentation of corrective actions. This entails calibration, operation and maintenance of the various blood chemistry analyzers (blood gas and electrolytes analyzers) and associated equipment, and detailed record keeping for these procedures. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician (Lead Anesthesia Tech) GS-9 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of laboratory testing procedures to include maintenance, calibration, and quality control procedures. This includes the ability to perform these lab tests accurately and correctly. 2. Advanced knowledge of electronics and anesthesia equipment with skill in repairing and maintaining this equipment and repairing complex problems. 3. Comprehensive knowledge of central venous and pulmonary artery (Swan-Ganz) catheterization procedures including measuring cardiac outputs and intra-aortic balloon counter-pulsation procedures (i.e., balloon pump). 4. Knowledge and ability to assist with airway management techniques. 5. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. 6. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. 7. Ability to manage and supervise employees. 8. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Preferred Experience: SAVAHCS Anesthesia Medical Instrument Technician Experience. Ordering Anesthesia Supplies. Completing Anesthesia equipment inventory. Turning over OR rooms for Anesthesia purposes. Restocking Anesthesia supplies for OR and Non-OR cases.
