As a journeyman Locksmith assigned to the Carpenter Shop within the Maintenance and Operations Section of Engineering Service at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center Charleston, SC.

Duties

Major Duties: Performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing, and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations. Responsible for the Medical Center Locksmith Program including data entry and updating key information into space files and for the training and development of Key Control Programs for all Key Control Representatives. Conducts training on the Key Control System and required Computerized System Records and must deal with people at all levels concerning security of keying issues. Reviews drawings/blueprints provided to determine each type of lock for new construction projects. Performs visual and operational checks to locate trouble sources and determine best methods of correcting problems. Removes locks, disassembles, detects worn or damaged parts, i.e., broken springs, jammed pins, bent discs, broken tail pieces, rust, and corrosion. Lubricates and cleans parts, straightens bent parts, replaces broken parts, reassembles, tests, and reinstalls devices. Installs locks in doors, desks, office furniture, safes and other units as required by approved work orders only and makes necessary alterations to locking mechanisms and units to assure correct fit. Develops and maintains a special key hardware system for use in special areas such as mental health, meeting all special requirements for these areas. Performs all duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent is required to be able to lift 50 pounds and be physically able to walk, bend, stoop, stand and work in close spaces for long periods of time. Must have normal hearing and vision (with or without glasses) and possess good dexterity and coordination between hands and eyes. Incumbent works in a fully-secured lock shop containing all required tools, equipment and materials, and performs 60% of preliminary work therein. The remainder of the time spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, scrapes and bruises. Must wear shields for protection when operating key cutting machine and electric grinder. Observes all safety precautions. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
