The incumbent performs all duties of the journeyman Locksmith and is assigned to the Carpenter Shop within the Maintenance and Operations section of Engineering Service. They perform complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, desk, compartments, mobile equipment, safes and other secured locations.
Duties
This position is covered by the NAGE bargaining unit. Per the Master Agreement, the Area of Consideration will be:
First: Facility-wide (including remote offices under the facility, such as a CBOC)
Second: VA-wide
All others
Duties of the Locksmith include, but not limited to:
Performing visual and operational checks to locate trouble sources and determine best methods of correcting problems.
Removing locks, disassembles, detects worn or damaged parts, i.e., broken springs, jammed pins, bent discs, broken tail pieces, rust and corrosion.
Keying and rekeying locks by using standard key coding practices to conform to station policy and VA criteria.
Insures absolute key control and carefully monitors the key accountability system in use.
Maintaining Master Keying Plans for facility.
Maintaining materials and full set of tools and equipment.
Developing and maintaining a special key hardware system for use in special areas such as a mental health, meeting all special requirements for these areas.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30AM - 4:00PM

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Required to be able to life 50 pounds and be physically able to walk, bend, stoop, stand and work in close spaces for long periods of time. Must have normal hearing and vision (with or without glasses) and posses good dexterity and coordination between hands and eyes. The incumbent works in a fully-secured lockshop containing all required tools, equipment and materials, and performs 60% of preliminary work there. The remainder of the time spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, scrapes and bruises. Must wear shields for protection when operating key cutting machine and electric grinder. Observes all safety precautions.
