About the Position: Secures freight such as ammunition, munitions components, ordnance equipment, and missile components; and various packaged, boxed and crated items to prevent damage during shipment. Fabricates various types of wooden blocking and bracing devices to hold freight in place.

Duties

Secures freight such as ammunition, munitions components, ordnance equipment, industrial machinery, armor plating and vehicle armor, metal munition and missile components. Independently blocks and braces a wide variety of material for shipment such as: Ammunition Peculiar Equipment (APE); 2.75 rockets; 500 and 750 pound bombs; and sensitive conventional munitions and components for shipment. Determines how each truckload or carload is to be dunnaged to conform to Department of Transportation (DOT), rail, and government requirements. Independently plans and constructs a variety of wooden boxes, crates, pallets, skids, braces, chock blocks, and special containers for storing and shipping goods. Works from drawings, specifications or oral instructions concerning the type of item, overall size and shape and any special features required. Selects and uses a variety of hand and power tools and fastening devices such as hand and portable power saws, table saws, drills, pneumatic nailing guns, hammers and nails to cut, fit, join and install wooden parts. Operates CNC Router and pallet jigs of various sizes to chamfer and slot boards to specific dimensions required, and to assemble pallets. Operates flat bed and single-axle dump trucks that do not exceed 10,000 pounds weight. Operates electric and gasoline powered forklifts capable of lifting up to 15,000 pounds.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • The incumbent of this position must be able to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • This position requires a Non-Sensitive (NS) and No Access Level security clearance.

Work includes planning and constructing a variety of custom containers and material handling items from raw hardwood materials; Packing, preserving, and crating items for shipment and/or storage; Bracing and blocking items for shipment; Skill in operating forklifts in tight spaces to facilitate loading and unloading of material; Experience blocking and bracing equipment on truck and trailers using blocks, braces, or other staying devices; Planning and constructing a variety of custom containers and material handling items from raw hardwood materials. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Incumbent continuously lifts, carries, and positions tools and materials weighing up to 45 pounds. Moves or positions extremely heavy items using jacks, levers or assistance from other workers. Work requires standing, stooping, reaching and other uncomfortable working positions. Often works in cramped or awkward positions and may have to climb upon or crawl under vehicles or structures. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside and the incumbent is frequently exposed to disagreeable heat, coldness, dampness, wind, rain, noise, possible cuts from power tools, handling lumber, spiking, nailing, and other work. There is exposure to nose and lung irritation from dust and sawdust. Often exposed to injury from falling objects, falls in and around conveyances, or vehicle/pedestrian accidents. There is exposure to skin and eye irritation from wood treatment chemicals. Must wear protective eyeglasses, a face shield, protective ear devices, gloves, hard hats, steel-toed safety shoes, or other protective equipment.
