Incumbent performs the duties of a Boiler Plant Operator in the Power Plant, Facility Management Division, VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Duties
Major Duties:
Maintains and diagnoses problems for all mechanical equipment in the Power Plant. This equipment includes high temperature hot water generators, high-pressure steam boilers, and auxiliary equipment. Auxiliary equipment includes air compressors and receivers, steam generators, condensate pumps, boiler feed pumps, vacuum pumps, system makeup pumps, heating and ventilating systems, de-aerators, water conditioning equipment, diesel engine and other emergency electrical equipment.
Repairs and installs mechanical devices, pneumatic and electronic instruments and controls to ensure that boilers and auxiliary equipment are operational.
Repairs, replaces or installs new steam, water, vacuum, gas, oil and fuel lines. Also maintains distribution systems and equipment in the hospital and other associated buildings.
Incumbent makes scheduled rounds recording and checking data on equipment under the incumbent's care. Incumbent regulates equipment and control devices to maintain combustion efficiency, proper pressures and temperatures, and assures that all auxiliary equipment is working properly.
Incumbent makes period inspections of all equipment, including controls and measuring devices, cleaning, greasing and oiling units as required. Examines all equipment to assure it is working properly. Makes emergency and minor repairs as necessary such as recovering pipe, changing or repacking valves, stopping leaks by tightening connections, etc. Notifies supervisor of the need for major repairs.
Incumbent periodically checks the electrical panel boards in both plants and runs the standby emergency electrical generating equipment under load on a weekly basis to assure that all components are in good working order.
*Work Schedule: Full-time, Week 1 of the 2-week pay period: Monday 2 PM-10 PM, Tues-Fri 6 AM - 2 PM; Week 2 of the 2-week pay period: Mon-Fri 6 AM-2 PM. May be required to be present to provide off-hours support for utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc. This position is also the night shift coverage position, so you would cover the 6 PM-6 AM shifts for any approved leave of night shift operators.
Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): *This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.
Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized
Must have journeyman level acquired training and experience in the repair and operation of both steam and high temperature-hot water boilers and auxiliary equipment in plants of this size. The total combined capacity of the two Power Plants is 210,000 lbs. of steam per hour.
Must have thorough knowledge of the water treatment procedures and water analysis, and the use of standard chemicals and tests. Must have thorough knowledge of water treatment equipment and systems.
Must have knowledge of manuals and environmental regulations necessary for plant operations.
Physical Effort: Must often lift heavy pipe or parts of machinery. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds and be physically capable of working in cramped and awkward positions that are uncomfortable and tiring.
Working Conditions: Incumbent often works in high temperature surroundings and occasionally works in nontoxic fumes and dust. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises, burns and high noise level surroundings. Additionally, works with toxic and corrosive water treatment chemicals.
