About the Position: This position secures and examines freight, plans and constructs custom containers, pack, preserve and crate items for shipment or storage, and brace and block items for shipment, and operate forklifts to facilitate loading and unloading. This is an AR3135 Bargaining Unit position.

Duties

Examine and secure freight for shipment or storage. Determine the best work methods and materials for securing items to prevent shifting or damage. Install blocking and bracing against non-rectangular, irregular, slanted, sloped or curved walls, floors, sides or overhead areas. Fabricate, fit, and install wooden bracing to secure odd-shaped boxes and crates of equipment and ammunition or other hazardous materials. Build temporary trestles, false floors, decking, bulkheads, and cribbing in odd-shaped cargo areas or around obstacles.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires an Arms, Ammunition and Explosives Security Certification/Screening in accordance AR 190-11.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Blocker and Bracer without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform the most difficult and complex securing ammunition or other hazardous cargo by, constructing and installing boxes, wooden blocks, braces, wedges, and gates for loading inside or upon, box and flat rail cars, vans, trucks, and other conveyances which have irregular, nonrectangular, and obstructed cargo areas. I am skilled in determining measurements needed for cargo before construction and during installation to make fit. I am skilled in locating and conducting pre-shipment inspections and loaded hazardous cargo such as ammunition and other components identified for shipment using material handling equipment such as electrical, gasoline, or diesel-powered forklifts. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATIONS ETC. (INCLUDING BLUEPRINT READING)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)??????? Physical Effort: You must be capable of moderate to heavy physical effort to handle approximately 45 pounds; however, occasionally will handle items weighing up to 65 pounds. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device. The two person lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts. Work pace may be rapid for long periods of time and heavy exertion is required at frequent intervals. Work situation may require constant sitting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, or climbing in strained or awkward positions. Working Conditions: This position requires work to be performed at work sites usually in railroad cars, trailer, or magazines, under conditions of poor ventilation and inadequate light and is frequently exposed to disagreeable heat, coldness, dampness, wind and rail. Frequently is exposed to noise and to possible cuts, abrasions, and splinters from power sawing, handling lumber, spiking, nailing, and other work. Is exposed to nose and lung irritation from dust and sawdust and possible injuries from falling objects, swinging crane loads, etc. May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, a face shield, protective ear devices, gloves, hard hats, hard toe shoes, or other protective equipment. Will be subject to general explosion hazard for the majority of the time and may also be subject to TNT or Tetryl-Poison hazard, toxic fumes, and other conditions found in explosives handling.
