The incumbent will perform computerized axial tomographic scanning of heads and bodies, and a full range of diagnostic and interventional examinations. The technologist will learn how to assist the radiologist under the direction of senior technologists in the performance of procedures that include but a not limited to percutaneous superficial and deep organ biopsies; paracentesis and thoracentesis procedures; intravenous and intraarterial infusions; tissue ablation, and drainage procedures.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent will use specific knowledge of human anatomy, including-cross sectional anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or multi-slice Computer Tomography including: CT Angiography, drainages, biopsies, virtual colonography, along with exams of the head, neck, spine, chest, body, and extremities. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures. Prioritizes scheduled and emergent patients who may require immediate care. Prepares equipment for daily operation, brings system up, checks all self-calibrating parameters. Cleans and prepares equipment surfaces in accordance with established infection control guidelines. Oversees and trains new hire CT techs in the modality and according to the CT SOP. Performs quality control/assurance checks on completed CT scans to ensure optimally diagnostic images are referred for radiologists' interpretation. Determines technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of slices, etc. To produce and satisfy requirements and high standards of CT scanning. Performs Intravenous injections of Contrast Material with hand injections and/or with the aid of the pressure injection system. Prepares contrast materials that are used in CT and CT angiography and other exams. Performs CT Angiography studies to include, but not limited to, cerebral, pulmonary, renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, runoff, and femoral arteries. Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am - 4:30pm with variable shifts required to include nights, weekends and holidays. This Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift; however, candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d) All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, completion of 1 year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled which demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics that are directly related to the specific assignment. For GS-09, completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the lower grade level and directly related to the position being filed .*Provide most recent non-award SF-50 as supporting documentation.* Preferred Experience: None. References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II Appendix G25 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-09. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted) and speed in working. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing I lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
