Duties

The position of civil AUSA offers a rare opportunity to combine a challenging and rewarding career as a federal prosecutor with life in a tropical paradise. An attorney with well developed litigation skills, proficiency in legal research and writing and experience with civil practice and procedure will be selected to fill this position. The Civil AUSA position offers a unique and challenging experience for a highly motivated attorney. The successful candidate must have legal acumen and experience to successfully prosecute and defend complex civil cases when provided the appropriate training and mentoring. Civil Attorneys represent the interests of the United States, its agencies, and its employees. They litigate a wide-range of civil cases brought under the U.S. Constitution and laws passed by Congress, and collect the debts of the United States. Among other cases, Civil Attorneys defend the United States in Federal Tort Claims Act cases, and prosecute cases under the False Claims Act to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse of public funds. You must have a desire to seek justice and vigorously use the authority of the U.S. Attorney's Office to protect individual civil rights, promote justice for Elders and Victims, and take the profit out of crime by using asset forfeiture law to make victims whole. Finally, the successful candidate must be capable of being a team player, work independently and use discretion and judgment in representing the United States. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.   • You must be a United States Citizen.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 7 years post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should have excellent academic credentials and some litigation experience, preferably at least 8 years. Applicants also should be computer literate, possess superior oral and written communication skills, have strong character and excellent interpersonal skills, have the capacity to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment, and have strong commitment to public service.You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
