As a Cartographic Technician, you will perform a wide variety of tasks involved in the development of cartographic products, such as field data collection and compilation; map file construction; and providing technical support of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Duties
Collecting geospatial data in the National Parks of Boston using mobile devices and GNSS receivers
Managing geospatial data for park planning, science, and management within National Park Service systems and following all appropriate data standards, using ArcGIS, Arc GIS Online, and other common software
Training colleagues, interns, partners, and others in GPS data collection and GIS data management
Producing maps using GIS and graphic design software for project reports, park planning, and public outreach
Maintaining active communications with key partners and colleagues, including staff from National Parks of Boston partner organizations, and the National Park Service and Region 1 GIS user communities
Maintaining inventories and updates of hardware and software necessary for collecting and managing geospatial data, and making recommendations for purchases
Participating in other natural and cultural resource management projects as needed
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. citizen or national.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- May be subject to a one-year probationary period.

- Status candidates must meet-time-in-grade requirements.
- You will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- A valid state driver's license is required.
Qualifications
In order to be qualified at the GS-6, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service collecting and analyzing data for the development of GIS databases and maps; capturing data in the field using GPS and other survey equipment; processing spatial data according to project data standards.
In order to be qualified at the GS-7, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in the Federal service collecting and analyzing data for the development of GIS databases and maps; capturing data in the field using GPS and other survey equipment; conducting quality checks on spatial data to ensure accuracy and reliability; and providing advice to others on collecting, analyzing, or interpreting spatial data.
For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
