This position is located in Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, in the Natural Resources and Research Program. Open to the first 75 applicants or until 08/30/2024 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Duties

Collect geospatial data in the National Parks of Boston using mobile devices and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers Manage geospatial data for park planning, science, and management within National Park Service systems and following all appropriate data standards, using ArcGIS, Arc GIS Online, and other common software. Train colleagues, interns, partners, and others in GPS data collection and GIS data management. Produce maps using GIS and graphic design software for project reports, park planning, and public outreach. Maintain active communications with key partners and colleagues, including staff from National Parks of Boston partner organizations, and the National Park Service and Region 1 GIS user community. Maintaining inventories and updates of hardware and software necessary for collecting and managing geospatial data, and making recommendations for purchases. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/30/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: I have at least one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal Service performing tasks in cartography or in a related field (such as photogrammetry or geodesy). Specialized experience is experience that equips the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience may include: (1) Developing of GIS databases and maps, including data collection, editing, and interpretation; (2) Using technology for the field capture of data, including use of GPS and other survey equipment; (3) Processing and correcting field captured spatial data, as well existing legacy spatial data to ensure accuracy and reliability; and (4) Utilizing GIS for the statistical interpolation of spatial data and mapping the results; and (5) providing guidance and technical assistance in the above at an introductory level to colleagues or volunteers. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full graduate year of education (18 semester hours or whatever number your school uses to represent one graduate academic year) concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, etc. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 18 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) Assisting with the development of GIS databases and maps, including data collection, editing, and interpretation; (2) Using technology for the field capture of data, including use of GPS and other survey equipment; (3) Processing and correcting field captured spatial data, as well existing legacy spatial data to ensure accuracy and reliability; and (4) Utilizing GIS for the statistical interpolation of spatial data and mapping the results. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
