This position is located at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ). NIJ provides objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels. The incumbent develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects.
Duties
Primary responsibility involves overseeing research on violence and victimization prevention, with a focus on topics including firearms, community violence interventions, victims of crime, violence against women, domestic radicalization and violent extremism, violence against older populations, and other related topic areas.
Serves as a technical expert focused on violence prevention and victimization, involving diverse victim populations.
Performs a variety of analytical research, evaluation, program development, and other tasks in furtherance of the violence and victimization portfolio in the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Office of Research, Evaluation, Forensics and Technology (OREFT) program.
Develops, implements, analyzes, and disseminates a range of extramural and intramural social science research and evaluation projects in furtherance of the OREFT program.
Serves as a technical expert for a significant segment of a violence and victimization prevention research portfolio and other related practice areas.

Qualifications
Basic Entry Requirements:
Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position;
-OR-
Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field;
-OR-
Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.
In addition to the basic entry requirements, applicants must also meet the experience/education for specific grade levels, as described below.
For GS-11: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Examples of specialized experience include:
Offering advice and developing recommendations and proposals about violence and victimization prevention and other related areas of practice.
Utilizing knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences to assist in research design, data collection, and data analysis for studies involving one or more of the violence and victimization prevention topic areas: firearms, community violence prevention, victims of crime, violence against women, domestic radicalization and violent extremism, violence against older populations, and other related topic areas.
For GS-11: Substitution of Education for Experience:
A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. if related.
For GS-11: Combination of Education and Experience:
Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.
For GS-12: Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Examples of specialized experience include:
Coordinating and providing technical advice about violence and victimization prevention and other related areas of practice.
Utilizing knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences to develop and conduct research design, data collection, and data analysis for studies involving one or more of the violence and victimization prevention topic areas: firearms, community violence prevention, victims of crime, violence against women, domestic radicalization and violent extremism, violence against older populations, and other related topic areas.
Utilizing social science knowledge sufficient to extract significant findings from quantitative and qualitative research, and present findings to senior scientists in regards to violence and victimization prevention and other related areas of practice.
Performing a variety of analytical and evaluative procedures such as fact-finding and task analysis to identify and obtain a variety of information relevant to ongoing actions related to violence and victimization prevention or related areas of practice.
