This position is for Chief of Sterile Processing Service (SPS) located at the Butler VA Healthcare System. As Chief of SPS the incumbent coordinates and/or plans, manages and controls sterile processing duties as assigned in support of all SPS programs for patient care medical/ surgical supply inventory, instruments and equipment received, sterilized, reprocessed, packaged, and distributed, serving as a technical expert and focal point for all sterile processing programs.
Duties
Major Duties:
The Chief of Sterile Processing Service will have the overall responsibility for the supervision, administrative management an direction of the SPS.
Will forecast, plan, develop and manage the SPS program and ensure SPS functions are following all regulatory mandates.
Will manage the overall SPS budget including determining resource needs, allocating resources and ensuring proper utilization in productivity, efficiency, cost effectiveness of SPS operations and full authority to make decisions pertinent to the service.
Will formulate objectives, develop priorities and implement plans that support organizational goals of SPS.
The Chief of SPS will provide leadership and management within SPS and identifies and maintains SPS standards of care in all services provided in collaboration with the Associate Director, Patient Care Services.
The incumbent is to demonstrate the expertise and comprehensive understanding of infection control practices, asepsis, and disinfection/ sterilization.
The incumbent is responsible for designated second-line supervisory authority, SPS POC, responsibility and accountability for the extended hour operation of the unit, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely, technically accurate and safe services within accepted standards of clinical and infection control practices.
The incumbent will ensure the practice of SPS is consistent with the VA Standards, VISN 4 policies/ procedures and external regulatory standards, such as the Joint Commission (JTC), AORN, Occupational Health an Safety Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and AAMI.
Will be responsible for performance management, customer service/ patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee regulations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, accreditation and regulatory standards and organization wide education on reusable medical equipment (RMD) standards and expectations for critical and semi- critical RMD.
Responsible for time scheduling of the unit, coaches staff, addresses employee conduct and performance issues, completes recurring reports and performance evaluations in a timely manner.
Will work closely with Executive Leadership in planning, strategizing, formulating policies and resolving any issues related to SPS and serves as a HCS Subject Matter Expert within the SPS domain.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm; or as needed for department needs.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Preferred Experience: The incumbent to demonstrate the expertise and comprehensive understanding of infection control practices, asepsis, and disinfection/ sterilization. Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 10. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS 10 Step 1 to GS 10 Step 10.
Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. Butler VA Health Care System services medical, geriatric, mental health, CLC residents, and outpatients. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent maybe required exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and maybe required to don personal protective equipment. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
