This position in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) located at the Butler VA Healthcare System. This position is under the Lead SPS and Chief Sterile Processing Services. This position also requires the incumbent to perform the full range of duties required to decontaminate, clean, sterilize, process, prepare, store, and distribute medical supplies and Reusable Medical Devices (RMD) used in all areas of the facility and Community Living Center (CLC).

Duties

This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. ?Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Major Duties: Decontamination Pick up from clinic and/or receives contaminated critical and semi critical RMD in the decontamination area may receive noncritical equipment in the decontamination area as well. Scan RMD and soiled containers into Decontamination through CensiTrac system. Adheres to and reports any non-compliance towards facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to SPS Lead or Chief. Dissembles the RMD as determined by manufacture instruction for use (IFU) and standard operating procedures (SOP). Decontaminates reusable items by determining the appropriate method for removing gross contamination by means of manual cleaning procedures. Assembly and Sterilization Adheres to and reports any non-compliances towards facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. Complete daily cleaning assignments ensuring they are completed and documented. Follow all device specific IFU and SOPs while conducting assembly and sterilization procedures. Assembles a wide variety of instrument trays and sets used for medical procedures utilized in the facility and CLC. Perform quality checks for all RMD. Sterile Storage and Distribution Ensure documentation of Sterilization is completed and passed. Ensure biological resulted negatively before releasing RMD to clinics. Inspect each RMD for indicator changes, staining, contamination, tip protects in place, or any package integrity issues or compromise. if any noted scan item to Decontamination and returns to Decontamination immediately. Scan RMD from sterilizer into appropriate location utilizing CensiTrac. Compressed/Flexible:Not Authorized Telework: Not Authorized Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: One year above high school that includes at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-04 (Entry Level): Experience - Six months experience as a Medical Supply Technician (MST), operating room or surgical technician or other position that demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing in a clinical setting; OR Education: Two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the occupation. NOTE: Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialist, or nursing assistants obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces, the U.S. Maritime Service, or hospitals under close medical and professional supervision, may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for up to 6 months of experience. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, applicant must demonstrate the KSAs below: Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. Basic knowledge of medical terminology in order to assemble specialty operating room/clinic instrument sets. Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. GS-05 (Developmental Level): Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level. OR Education: Four academic years above high school leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least a 12 semester hours of course related to the Medical Supply Technician occupation or a Bachelors degree. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, applicant must demonstrate the KSAs below: Basic knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings. Basic knowledge of event-related packaging in regards to sterility. Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment. GS-06 (Full Performance Level): Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, applicant must demonstrate the KSAs below: Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinical settings. Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination. Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures. Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation. Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures. References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II G47 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04, GS-05 or GS-06.
