Duties

You will consult technical documents and manuals (e.g., manufacturer's manuals, technical publications) to verify heavy mobile equipment maintenance and repairs are completed correctly. You will determine tools and equipment to use to inspect or repair heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. You will repair major systems (e.g., diesel engines, turbo charged engines, transmissions, drivelines and hydraulic utility systems, final drives, gear boxes) for equipment functionality. You will confirm that equipment component's measurements are precise and fit correctly with connecting parts. You will diagnose mechanical failures and finalize reconditioning and testing procedures for heavy mobile equipment.

  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the duties of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by the following: 1) Ensuring correct methods procedure, processes tools test equipment and specifications are used and followed; 2) Repairing, rebuilding, overhauling and modifying the largest and most complex heavy mobile equipment, having integrated/interconnected engine systems (e.g. armored fighting vehicles, locomotive engines, cranes, weight and material handling equipment, aerial work platforms, larger construction trucks with diesel engines and similarly complex heavy mobile equipment used for construction; 3) Disassembling, inspecting, and assembling large/complex engines (e.g., up to 16 cylinders and 2000hp); 4) Repairing/overhauling gasoline or diesel engines (e.g. 12-cylinder, 1,000 H.P); and 5) Using test procedures and equipment to trace and repair hard-to-locate problems.
