The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is recruiting for Two (2) candidates for the position of Maintenance Mechanic, located in Charleston, SC. The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Mechanic in an complex medical facility, which is constantly evolving within a highly complex and competitive geographic area.
Duties
Incumbent(s) performs daily rounds of all areas assigned and examines the nursing logbooks, and talks with nurses and other professional staff concerning current problems, and those noted during the previous evening, night and weekend shifts. Incumbent(s) repairs and maintains structures such as furniture, railings, shelves, doors, bulletin boards, etc. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
Installs and replaces ceiling tiles, bumper rails, handrails, comer guards, cove base, ceramic tile, and other parts of buildings using hand and power tools, furniture installation, and movement of bulky materials.
Makes minor repairs and may perform some installation of existing utilities and disposal systems.
Work on painting projects when determined appropriate by Supervisor. This factor includes following local and national safety rules and guidelines.
Sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Physical Requirements: Incumbent usually works indoors; however, he/she may be occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on external work sites. Many work sites are dirty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and have unpleasant odors. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation to harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, etc. The incumbent may wear protective clothing.
