The work for this level Maintenance Mechanic Leader involves performing routine maintenance and repairs to facilities, structures, equipment and related fixtures primarily at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC and on occasion, incumbent may be required to perform work at other associated work environments including healthcare, laboratory, industrial, administrative, food preparation, soiled and sterile areas and pipe basement, and other locations as needed.

Duties

Major Duties include but are not limited to: Uses a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry, masonry, and other related trades. Incumbent will be required to hang frame, walls, hang drywall, hang wall mounted accessories, form and prep concrete, prep floors, install flooring, install tile and grout, install brick and mortar, install ceilings, install ceiling mounted accessories, cabinet making and repair, and finish carpentry and other duties as assigned. Painting Uses a variety of trade practices associated with painting and other related trades. Incumbent will be required to paint, prepare wall surfaces for painting, protect surrounding area from painting activity, fume control, and trim work. Building Maintenance Uses a variety of trade practices associated with general maintenance to perform building repairs. Incumbent will be required to repair damaged walls, perform plaster repairs, ceiling repairs, flooring repairs, furniture repair, assembly and disassembly of furniture, and other duties as assigned. Performs visual examinations and operational test to determine the need for repairs or replacement on various systems. Locksmith Incumbent functions as an expert in the area of locking device capabilities, electronic locking systems and functions. Incumbent must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide range of makes, models, and types of common mechanical locking devices and of the working interrelationships with related components comprising the locking systems, including the modifying, reworking, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair. Such knowledge should also include the locking mechanisms of alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors, electronic devices and other related items which make up a complete security of surveillance system in order to provide management with recommendations regarding the most suitable locks to be used in solving specific security problems and/or to create those locks by modifying and adapting locking mechanisms to meet the special requirements. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Painting Flexibility Architecture Accountability Attention to Detail Manage Resources Quality Assurance Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, working in cramped awkward positions while installing items; reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools; lifting, pushing and pulling objects of varying weights up to 20 pounds and less often, up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves with assistance moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Also requires working outside in low and high temperatures with frequent breaks.
