The purpose of the Pathways Intern Employment Program is to provide the Student Trainee with exposure to public service, enhance educational experience, and support educational goals. The program is formally structured to give interns the opportunity to work in positions related to their academic/career goals. **This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present in Lakewood, CO.**

Duties

As an Intern in the Pathways program, the incumbent provides support to projects and other engineers involved in the Engineering disciplines at Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). Assignments provide training and experience in the functional area which prepare the student for more advanced assignments. trainee must work at least 640 hours on-the-job prior to completion of school to be eligible for conversion to a permanent position. Work assignments are progressive and intended to provide specific career-related training and experience to develop skills and knowledge necessary to perform increasingly difficult technical assignments in the information technology field. Requirements

  • Must be a student, accepted for enrollment or enrolled, and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing and a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • This employer participates in the e-Verify program.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment.
  • A Pathways Internship Participant Agreement is required.

Qualifications

Pathways Intern Employment candidates must meet the qualifications consistent with OPM qualification standards applicable to the position being filled by the closing date of the announcement. See Education Section for education requirements for this position. You MUST be either currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment into a qualifying educational program beginning the next available school term to qualify for this program. Enrollment must be in an accredited high school, community college, vocational or technical program, undergraduate, graduate, or professional program that culminates in a diploma, certificate or degree. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45-quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university or 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week. An academic year of graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement or the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 academic year of full-time study. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience and/or Education Requirements: GS-3 Completion of I full academic year of post-high school study or 6 months general experience or combination of post-high school education and general experience. GS-4 Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate degree or 1-year general experience or combination of post high school education and general experience. GS-5 Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a Bachelors Degree in Engineering from a ABET accredited program or equivalent certification as an Engineer.

Education

GS-3 Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.
GS-4 Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree.
GS-5 Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a Bachelors Degree in Engineering from a ABET accredited program or equivalent certification as an Engineer.

To be acceptable, the program must:
  1. Lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or
  2. Include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished
  1. A thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and
  2. A good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

EDUCATION: Students must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited educational institution and provide the following:
  1. Letters, records, or statements issued from the high school, vocational institution, college or university from an official source (i.e., university registrar's office) and/or
  2. Copy of transcripts which reflect field of study, school name, students name, GPA or academic standing, past and current course work, degree program and major/concentration.
Transcript MUST be submitted to be considered for this position. (A copy of your degree will not be accepted- unofficial transcripts are acceptable).

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
