This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Research Services Central Office. The incumbent will carry out professional assignments involving reference, processing, description, and other related activities. The incumbent will work on Special Projects, including the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection.

Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As a Archivist, you will: Contribute to the planning of programs leading to the identification and protection of permanently valuable records. Plan and coordinate activities leading to the identification of records eligible for transfer to the National Archives and Records Administration. Contribute significantly to the planning of a finding aids program that facilitates discovery and use of a complex body of records. Assist researchers in navigating complex finding aid systems and establishing connections between related archival sources, regardless of their physical location.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. To be qualified for this position at the GS-9 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience researching and reporting on archival records. AND Experience providing customer service to various audiences through oral and written communication techniques. OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (i.e., beyond the first year) of graduate education is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F): For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07level for 52 weeks.

Education

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Basic requirements for all grades:


Applicants who meet the basic requirements described in the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) are fully qualified for the specified entry grade (generally grade GS-5). Applicants who wish to qualify for positions at higher grade levels (generally grade GS-7 and above) must also meet the requirements shown below, in addition to meeting the basic requirements.

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
