This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Duties

The team member functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs [at the GS-9 level and below]. The team member provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. Duties include but are not limited to: Administrative Duties: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, restocking and inventory control. Develops and maintains tech assignment schedule for DRT and CT technologists. Report absences and tardiness to the administrator and section chief. Trains new technologists in CT scans, radiographic and fluoroscopic imaging procedures. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Conducts employee competency assessments and performance evaluations. Instruct other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Monitors work performance by contractors and in-house Services assuring satisfactory completeness. Perform staffing and workflow volume analysis to determine additional staffing requirement and future planning in expanding services to consider adding exam rooms, new equipment and other resources required to ensure a safe, quality, and timely delivery of services. Schedule exams in a manner to optimize all of the R/F equipment units, CT scans and other modalities (MR, Ultrasound, Mammography, Nuc Med, PET scans, VIR) while maintaining a flexibility to allow for emergency cases. Develops and maintains a quality assurance program and other performance measures Facilitate daily and other regular reports to assess our standing in meeting patient access metrics, scheduling compliance, and other indicators for quality improvement. Document over exposure and provide follow up procedure by collaborating with the radiologists, the RSO, and other clinicians. Leads and participate in Quality Improvement (QI) and QA committee meetings to continually improve and meet quality benchmarks. Other Administrative duties as assigned. Imaging Duties: Performs quality control and calibration of CT scans and R/F units to maintain optimal performance and exposures. Independently makes routine and emergent radiographic and computer tomographic (CT) examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required and makes exposures necessary for requested procedures. Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from radiologist or medical officers. Performs as technologist in charge on less demanding shifts or when functioning outside the department with mobile units in the ED, ICU, OR or at bedside. Employee receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations including care of trauma cases, critically ill patients, isolation patients and other emotionally and physically impaired individuals. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Secures the confidence and cooperation of patients during procedures Employee prepares exam rooms with sterile supplies, local anesthetics and any supplies required for given exams. Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions in CT and DRT. Notifies radiologist of images requiring their immediate attention. Works with the radiologist as a member of the surgical/radiographic team during biopsies, drainage or any procedure requiring fluoroscopic guidance. Interviews patient obtaining pertinent medical history and precise medication usage as it pertains to the cardiac system and other extenuating conditions. Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self Maintains proficiency on reconstruction/reprocessing techniques in digital radiography. Reviews new developments in the field and recommends adoption to the service chief and/or supervisor of the Radiology Service. The radiographer must be certain patient identification pertain to the appropriate images obtained. Performs picture archival duties. Completes other imaging and administrative duties as assigned in compliance with policy, regulations, and other directives or requirements by local and federal agencies. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10: Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate the experience above as well as the following technical KSAs: and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs: Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
