Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): This position is eligible for EDRP, a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties

This Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist uses specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) position is in the the Radiology Service at the Togus Maine VA Medical Center, located at the Togus, Maine location. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week. Duties include, but are not limited to: Knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. Performs Interventional Radiologic (IR) procedures of the head, neck, chest, and body. Schedule exams to optimize the use of the interventional suite while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. Assist in the performance of peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities, inclusive of renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc. to achieve diagnostic and/or therapeutic studies of the vascular systems. Performs most exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques. Works with Interventional Radiologist and other Surgical Team providers and personnel as a member of Team. Maintains strong knowledge of contrast media utilized in IR procedures, ensuring patient safety. Maintains clean and sanitary equipment and environment. Maintains technical skills through independently performing exams, both generalized and specialized procedures. Maintains professional, cooperative, and collaborative behavior when working with other employees, patients, and visitors. Operates independently and without direct supervision as a technologist that is responsible for the assistance with and coordination of all interventional diagnostic radiology examinations. IR technologists must be knowledgeable in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS). Works closely with other technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description.] English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). GS 10 Experience: Have at least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS 9) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Assignments: Technologists working in this special assignment may function as vascular interventional (VI), cardiac interventional (CI) and/or cardiovascular-interventional (CV) technologists which use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements regarding contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures. IR technologist must be knowledgeable in digital imagining and PACS.] The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: 1. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes. 2. Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures. 3. Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment. 4. Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies. Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. Loss of Credential: An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain certification within two years, or who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
