Duties

Assists with radio operation to provide communication services for operational activities in areas such as emergency assistance, law enforcement, and fire-fighting support to protect life and/or property. Provides information and enforces regulations regarding park use, patrols campgrounds, directs vehicular/pedestrian traffic, issues written guidance to assist visitors with compliance. Develops/conducts interpretive talks/tours and answers questions which require knowledge of a limited variety of facts, events, circumstances, personalities, and natural characteristics identified with the site. Records information on accidents/incidents and on items such as water quality, plant infestation, wildlife and fish populations, and erosion control. Reads weather instruments and records data.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent's normal workweek will include weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), holidays, and night work.
  • Incumbent is subject to unscheduled overtime work at all hours in case of fire, accident or other emergency.
  • Incumbent is required to wear a Corps of Engineers Park Ranger Uniform as prescribed by ER 670-2-l.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid, State-issued Motor vehicle Driver's license.
  • Incumbent must anticipate using various hand tools such as axe, shovel, power saw, and related tools.
  • Exposure to stinging insects (possible reaction - anaphylactic shock) and poisonous plants may be encountered.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification with in 12 months of employment.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a First Aid Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • A pre-employment physical is required.
  • Work is outdoor; incumbent will be subject to inclement weather (cold, heat, rain, snow), etc.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience which includes 1) Communicating with the public in a professional manner; 2) Providing information regarding services or activities of interest to the public; 3) Enforcing rules or regulations; 4) Implementing habitat improvements; and 5) Providing customer service; AND three months of specialized experience which includes 1) Communicating with the public in a professional manner; 2) Providing information regarding services or activities of interest to the public; 3) Enforcing rules or regulations; 4) Implementing habitat improvements; and 5) Providing customer service. OR Education: One year of education above the high school level with six semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 9. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages.
