The incumbent serves as a visual information specialist, performing work that communicates information for patient education, staff awareness, special events and other activities associated with one of VA's flagship Veteran hospitals. This position reports to the Public Affairs Officer.
Duties

Uses visual information techniques to communicate information for patient education, staff awareness and training, medical/scientific presentations and public affairs activities.
Works with customers to meet their goals while ensuring medical center policies and regulations are being followed.
Ensures adherence to Section 508 Compliance Requirements for all electronic/online posted publications that are accessible for people with disabilities in accordance with federal regulation.
Designs and displays media materials such as banners, anatomical representations, photos, illustrations, logos, graphics in a variety of different formats/mediums.
Assists in inventory management for all equipment in the work shop.
Decides best medium/materials for project based on needs of the customer and available inventory.
Applies principles of visual design through dedicated computer editing software applications to meet the expectations of the customer/intended audience.
Uses ingenuity, experience and imagination to best utilize multimedia equipment, software and/or processes to meet the medical center's mission and operational requirements.
Photographs/Videos medical center events for both specific and documentary purposes.
Transforms written descriptions of subject matter into visual representations without existing pictures, models or diagrams.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for the Visual Information Specialist GS-1084-9, you must meet one of the following:
EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service (GS-07) that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means. Note: This experience must be demonstrated on your resume to receive credit.

EDUCATION: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related, with a major study in commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position. Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials.

Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed progressively higher-level graduate education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The employee sits for extended periods of time, while operating computer and printers. Use of computers may cause eyestrain with extensive reading of information from computer monitors, from hardcopy text, and from source documents. In preparation of display and three-dimensional artwork the employee will operate stand-alone equipment on work surfaces that require standing, lifting, and reaching. Lifting and carrying less than fifty pounds may be required.
