About the Position: This position is located at the Advanced Manufacturing Center within the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).
Duties
Make independent interpretation and translation of work orders, drawings, and specifications that are often lacking in such items as dimensions, tolerances, and types of fits and finishes.
Lay out work by measuring and marking straight lines, arcs, circles, angles, and location points in different planes as guides for setting up work pieces for drilling, tapping, turning, lapping, etc. using a variety of measuring and marking tools.
Plan sequence of operations which involves original innovations in set-ups, attachments, techniques and tools, open-set ups/special adaptation of equipment or process for which the tools/attachments were not specifically designed for.
Set up and operates all types of conventional machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, bench, plain, or universal milling machines, shapers, planers, internal and external grinders, drill presses and radial drills.
Operate machine tools to cut, drill, bore, tap, ream, shape, turn, mill, grind, hone and lap items.
Provide collaborative input with the machine selection, sequence of operations, tooling, fixturing and method of machining during Plan Reviews with the Process Planner, QA Planner, Methods Technician, N/C Programmer, and Tool Designer.
Manufactures parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys and performs all the machining work required in the manufacturing of castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications.
Operate the N/C machine to complete the entire work assignment, if the machining operation requires extensive manual input or precise nonstandard machining operations.
Independently resolves problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and suggests new alternative methods, if appropriate
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Qualifications
This position will be filled at the WG-10 or WG-11 level. If selected at the WG-10 level, noncompetitive promotion to the full performance level is authorized.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes interpreting and translating work orders, drawings, and specifications; setting up and operating a variety of conventional machine tools such as lathes, vertical and horizontal boring mills, or universal milling machines, internal and external grinders, drill presses and radial drills; knowledge of the use of tooling required to produce the features, tolerances and surface finishes to specifications; using precision measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers, squares, outside/inside depth micrometers, daily indicators and protractors; resolving problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and suggesting new alternative methods to resolve problems; and applying advanced shop mathematics or handbook formulas in establishing needed dimensions and tolerances not found in work orders. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Work requires standing, bending and reaching; and frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally objects weighing as much as 45 pounds. Hoists, hand trucks, and other workers are available for heavier items.
Working Conditions: Works in a well-lighted, heated, ventilated shop. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject, to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required.
