You will serve as a Lead Nuclear Engineer in the Nuclear Fluid Systems and Mechanical Engineering Division of the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will provide engineering direction such as, Preparation, review and approval of Technical Work Documents (TWD) and administrative documents in support of reactor plant procedures. You will prepare and progress technical reports on assigned programs/projects involving the design, development and demonstration of nuclear technology relevant to you Area of Responsibility (AOR). You will interpret/evaluate engineering drawings/ specifications/ technical data packages. You will adapt precedents or existing strategies to provide recommendations and solutions to resolve a wide variety of problems. You will prepare, review and approve of off-station correspondence to resolve drawing, procedure, or equipment problems or to propose improvements. You will mentor technical subordinates, functional area associates and departmental management in the application of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, division/functional area engineering and general engineering leadership principles. You will direct the technical efforts of junior engineers and technicians in their performance of work on projects to which they are assigned and be able to resolve technical or administrative problems encountered. You will influence/persuade individuals and/or team members to adopt the incumbent’s technical decisions about which there may be conflict to achieve the desired result. You will discuss technical requirements of equipment with manufacturers and resolving any problems concerning use. You will share knowledge, skills and abilities possessed by the AOR throughout the associated functional area (community of practice) both within and outside the parent shipyard. You will lead, mentor, coordinate, integrate and communicate successfully the assigned critical skill elements in the associated community of practice (functional area) and with other interfacing functional areas. You will develop and execute action plans to resolve complex problems in their AOR which involve a variety of process partners; the Ship, other departments, and various levels of Command personnel.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Engineer providing technical direction to Shipyard elements (e.g. production, inspection, radiological control and test personnel) and recommending engineering solutions to complete construction, repair or modification work for the optimization of nuclear propulsion plant systems. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A (above)

OR

Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
