Duties

You will diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation; air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC). You will test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards to safely reclaim, recycle, and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made. You will conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure. You will perform maintenance, calibration, modification, installation, repair and replacement of analog and direct digital controls (DDC) systems and equipment.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR certification.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain current Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery certifications.
  • May be assigned to perform tasks in non-trade related fields as an assistant/helper as workload requires.
  • NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: You must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade. NOTE: This information must be provided with your application to be considered for the position. By law, all persons with access to a system or container that stores refrigerant, including A/C coolant such as R-22 or R-410A, must have Universal Certification received from an EPA approved certifying program. Certification card must be carried on person while in a duty status. The card shall be presented upon request. Any change in certification status, any Clean Air Act Section 608, 40 CFR 82 violations, EPA fines or pending EPA investigations must be reported at once to the direct supervisor and department head. Decertification may be grounds for dismissal. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic WG-5306-10 without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by performing the following tasks: 1) Installing, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, a variety of systems components such as compressors, which include gear, reciprocating, centrifugal, or rotary pump and a variety of refrigerant controls such as those with low and high pressure side floats, automatic thermostatic expansion valves, capillary or choke types, and those base on volume or quantity changes; 2) Examining, diagnosing malfunctions and making repairs to systems that include analog and direct digital control (DDC) systems used in complex heating ventilation; air conditioning, and refrigeration systems; 3) Reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and technical instructions; and 4) Following all guidelines and procedures pertaining to the use and handling of refrigerants in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations..
