About the Position: Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

Duties

Perform a variety of work involving the construction, installation, repair, or modification of wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness. Set up and operate a wide variety of wood-working machines and tools. Construct and repair a variety of items such as building frames, rafters, walls, doors, windows, interior and exterior trim, and miscellaneous items used in vans and shelters containing electronic equipment and systems. Read, interpret, and apply plans, specifications, and sketches. Set up, adjust and adapt hand and power tools to accomplish more difficult tasks such as cutting bevels, rabbets, chamfers, dados, grooves and milter joints, laminating and bonding and fine surfacing of material. Plan and lay out work in accordance with the drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of required work to be performed. Determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 25% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Carpenter without more than normal supervision to include (1) the operation of general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment; Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications and determining the layout and work sequences and types of lumbar or special related materials; (2) Planning and accomplishing a wide range of work sequences ranging from basic repairs to complex project segments with minimal supervision or review of work in progress; (3) Evaluating problems and determining how or what repairs to make and the type and grade of wood or appropriate wood substitute materials and type of tools to use; AND (4) Producing finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official. Arm movement is considerable. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing about 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a shop area where worker is subject to cuts from hand and powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Work may be unpleasant due to dust in the air. Work is also performed outside where protection from weather conditions is limited to unheated protective shells.
