About the Position: Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

Duties

Fabricate, assemble, install, and repair the simpler types of sheet metal articles. Work as a team member assembling parts fabricated in the main sheet metal shop. Make the more simple type repairs on metal body components. Assist journeymen mechanics in more complicated repairs. Smooth, fill, sand, and finish damaged body components using such tools as dolly sets, hammers, grinders, and sanders. Straighten or knock out dents and creases, perform body work such as using body filler to patch dents or holes. Measure, cut, and install metal. Lay out and mark cutting lines. Check parts installed against parts list to insure completion of installation.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 50% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen OutAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability to Use Hand Tools, Power Tools, etc., for Metal WorkDexterity (Assembly Disassembly Reassembly etc)Knowledge of Equipment, Structure, Materials, etc. (includes constructing repair, and forging)Layout and Pattern Development (includes Geometric Projection and Triangulation) Physical Effort: Physical exertion is moderate and includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and power tools. Lifts items weighing up to 40 pounds and weights in excess of 40 pounds are lifted with the assistance of coworkers or lifting devices. Working Conditions: Incumbent works both inside and outside and is subject to noise and vibration from shop machines and to a variety of weather conditions. Workers are subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns. Noise levels require wearing of protective ear devices. Safety glasses and aprons are worn to protect the eyes and clothing from airborne debris. In some shop areas where vibrating and painting are performed, dust and fumes are a periodic hazard. Incumbent is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate to this position.
