This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of Health (OHS). The OHS is the principal medical, workforce health and safety, and public health authority for DHS.
The primary purpose of this position is for the incumbent to perform and manages all matters pertaining to administration of the Peer Support program throughout the Headquarters program elements.
Non-BU: This is a non-bargaining unit position.
Duties
As a PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM SPECIALIST, GS-0301-13, your typical work assignments may include the following:
The incumbent is responsible for the overall operation and success of the peer support program to ensure standards of practice are met and maintained throughout all phases of program execution.
Determines and coordinates marketing, recruitment efforts; manages and provides for volunteers' training needs; as well as provides for the general care and guidance of each Peer Support Volunteer member.
The incumbent develops and adheres to directives, instructions, procedures and revises these guidance documents and associated interpretive material to implement new legislation, and to aid in consistency of care and implementation of peer services.
The day-to-day duties include defining program roles and benefits throughout Headquarters staff; conducting ongoing program evaluation; presenting peer support topic areas to headquarters offices; responding to requests for help from volunteers and headquarters at large; and establishing and maintaining listings of current volunteers available to all headquarters employees.

Requirements

- The incumbent must have peer support training certification.
- Critical Incident and Stress Management (CISM) certification is required from an approved certifying body within two (2) years of hire, if not previously attained. Psychological First Aid training is desirable.
Qualifications
Specialized Experience GS-13:
To qualify for the GS-13 grade level you must possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level performing duties
such as:
Experience utilizing peer support concepts to facilitate quality training of volunteers in recognizing signs of emotional distress and the desired skills and strategies needed to support recovery.
Experience applying principles of the missions, roles, functions, organizational structures, and operation of the DHS Components and DHS HQ Staff Offices that govern, interface with, and/or influence the needed peer support services and life cycle management of successfully delivering services.
Experience performing in a dynamic environment, assimilate new information, relate it to ongoing actions, and incorporate initiatives into management decision-making processes.
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for these grade levels.

Time-in-grade: Current General Schedule (GS) federal employees, and those that have served in GS positions within the last 52 weeks, must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade, or a combination of the next lower grade level and an equivalent band in the federal service by the closing of this announcement.
