You will serve as a HEATING, VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the FACILITIES MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT, PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT DIVISION of MCAS CHERRY POINT.

Duties

You will install, start-up, maintain, overhaul, service, and repair commercial and industrial furnaces, hot water boilers, steam boilers, reheat systems, incinerators, heat pumps and related heating systems. You will install, maintain and repair complex auxiliary and ancillary control systems. You will analyze system performance and make decision adjustments to control water temperature, air temperature, steam and water pressures, combustion efficiency, airflow and humidity. You will install, start-up, troubleshoot, service, and make repairs on a variety of commercial and industrial refrigeration, ventilation, and cooling systems. You will perform diagnostic testing of systems that are computer controlled. You will drive a utility truck or similar vehicle to and from the work site in order to transport self, supplies, and other employees.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license. And maintain on-base privileges once obtained
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You must be EPA certified in Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling.
  • You must furnish normal tools of the trade.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are requirements of this position. During destructive weather conditions such as, but not limited to, ice and snowstorms, high winds, and hurricanes, incumbent may be required to report to duty.
  • Incumbent will also be subject to call back for work during off-duty hours when an emergency arises to include weekends and holidays.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: performing maintenance and repair of complex auxiliary and ancillary control systems (e.g. transformers, relays, switches, rheostats, humidistatic, etc.); performing diagnostic testing of systems; installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial and domestic refrigeration, air-conditioning units, ventilation systems, and heating systems. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases which may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin and internal organs. Continually exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. Employee must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire retardant gloves. Safety equipment is often hot and uncomfortable and must be worn for long periods of time. SAFETY: The employee will utilize all required safety practices and equipment in the performance of the duties assigned to this position. Close attention will be required and action taken to ensure the work site is safe and co-workers are engaged in safe operation of power and hand tools. Worker will dress in accordance with requirements to ensure safety while operating equipment (e.g. no loose or dangling clothing articles are to be worn while operating tools in which they can become entangles). Worker will bring to the attention of the supervisor any unsafe practices, actions, or conditions. These practices and actions would be those performed by other employees assigned to the section, other Station personnel, or contractor personnel.
