This Deputy Station Director position supports the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station and the Forest Products Laboratory Provides strategic, administrative and technical leadership and is responsible for coordinating and integrating the administrative, budgeting, research, and communications that support the Station. Duties

Oversee planning, direction, execution of a multifaceted research science program including management of subordinate units or teams. Plan and prioritize science based projects including budget needs and allocation of funds. Develop and implement quality and performance metrics for a science organization’s performance. Secure and advocate for funding and partnerships inside and outside the organization. Plan, organize, direct, implement, and evaluate processes to lead people and manage resources to achieve desired results. Develop regulations, guidelines, or criteria for measuring program accomplishments for science program operations. Write reports containing findings and recommendations that serve as the basis for new administrative systems, legislative initiatives, regulations, or programs.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement: GS 15: At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the federal service. To qualify, your resume must show experience at this level in all the following areas: Leading program-wide planning, implementation, execution, and assessment of business operations, planning, applications, budget and policy formation, research agenda and responding to complex issues regarding development of a scientific research, forest, regional or national program related to land management. Providing intellectual leadership to set the strategic direction and intent for a research, forest, regional, or national land management program; Assessing impact of substantive programs and policies including legislation, state and private sector policies related to forestry research and/or resource management; Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
