As a work leader, the incumbent of this position independently plans, leads, and assures that the work of the division's Motor Vehicle Operators, Gardeners, Compensated Work Therapy employees, and contracted annual service contracts is being completed as directed, assigned, or contracted. The organizational location of this position is: Maintenance and Operations in the Transportation section of Engineering Service located at the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System, Kerrville Division.
Duties
As a work leader, the incumbent of this position independently plans, leads, and assures that the work of the division's Motor Vehicle Operators, Gardeners, Compensated Work Therapy employees, and contracted annual service contracts is being completed as directed, assigned, or contracted. Work assignments to this position are usually made in general terms with the details of accomplishment left to the Work Leader. The Work Leader shall function independently in scheduling work for all trades, evaluating their work, providing guidance, and identifying new work. Finished work is evaluated in terms of functionality, reliability, appearance, code enforcement, compliance, and trouble-free operation. The incumbent of this position independently utilizes a number of coordinating and supportive duties and responsibilities as follows:

The incumbent will lead a team of diverse individuals to include (4) WG-8 Motor Vehicle Operators, (2) WG-7 Motor Vehicle Operators, (2) WG-6 Tractor Gardener Operators, and (2) Compensated Work Therapy employees. The incumbent is held accountable for the effective functioning of the team to solve problems or program issues under review.
The incumbent distributes and balances workload tasks among employees in accordance with work flow requirements, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned tasks or projects.
He/She provides expert advice on specific requests and makes available written instructions, reference materials, and relevant background materials.
The incumbent is responsible for checking on work in progress and reviewing completed assignments to ensure that the supervisor's instructions on work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
He/She reports to the supervisor regarding employee performance, progress, and subject-matter training needs, as well as any performance problems.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must be alert at all times to prevent accidents when driving. Many patient transportation trips are made in congested "city" traffic and under hazardous road conditions. The position can require heavy lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling for loading/unloading patients and supplies. Physical exertion is also required during the performance of grounds activities. Daily walking over rough terrain, climbing, sitting in a vehicle for long periods of time is required.
