The primary purpose of this position is to provide an Archives Technician to access, arrange, preserve, disseminate, and maintain historical records and related material stored in the Air Force Historical Research Agency.

Duties

Responsible for accessioning all material received for inclusion in the Air Force Historical Research Agency archives. Review security and administrative markings on all documents being accessioned to ensure consistency, completeness, and proper handling of classified material. Provides reference and research services with respect to the dissemination of records maintained at the AFHRA and other government document repositories. Carries out special assignments. Prepares recurring and nonrecurring correspondence and reports, and other documents.

  • Work requires the ability of attaining a DOD security clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Clearance.
  • Required to walk two flights of stairs carrying boxes of documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • May be required to work irregular hours to include weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
  • Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.
  • May be required to military or commercial transportation to perform temporary duty.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support, Archives Technician Series SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of archival systems to include printer guides and indexes and on-line automated retrieval systems. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. Knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in location and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes and other archival materials. Knowledge of regulations and guidelines pertaining to Security, the Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act, classified and sensitive topics. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of archival systems to include printer guides and indexes and on-line automated retrieval systems. 2. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures. 3. Knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in location and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes and other archival materials. 4. Knowledge of regulations and guidelines pertaining to Security, the Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act, classified and sensitive topics. 5. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents, and storage methods. 6. Ability to read, comprehend and follow written documents such as regulations, instructions or standards that may be encountered on the job to ensure security procedures are followed as well as to identify and make applicable adjustments. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to operate general office equipment, such as personal computers, printers, fax machine, microfilm readers, copies, ect. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
