This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
Within the scope of Sleep Medicine, Respiratory and Pulmonary Technology, the Registered Respiratory Therapist provides comprehensive care for patients who have Sleep Disordered Breathing Diagnosis and other Pulmonary Diagnosis requiring CPAP/BPAP/AVAP therapy. The Registered Respiratory Therapist works in the CPAP Clinic.
Duties include, but not limited to:
Answer and close Consults entered specifically to PAP Clinic.
Extraction of messages from the phone messaging system and notating needs of patients.
Enter encounters and checking out patients after seeing them in clinic.
Communicates with the CPAP Coordinator and/or Home 02 Coordinator, pertaining to specific needs of individual patients.
Communicates with physicians, i.e. Sleep Clinic physicians, Pulmonologists, Primary Care Physicians, etc. regarding the management of the treatment needs of difficult prescriptions or difficult patients.
Enter notes in CPRS documenting appointment visits and procedures performed, including specific information pertaining to unit settings, patient tolerance to procedure, patient comprehension of instruction given to patients.
Follow up with patients, assess for compliance, triage for Sleep Clinic Physicians (Patients diagnosed with Sleep Disordered Breathing and prescribed a CPAP, BPAP, or AVAP unit can do well with regular PAP Clinic appointment visits, those patients having difficulty with compliance or mask issues or recurring symptoms despite compliance should be assessed by the Sleep Clinic Physicians.).
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care.
Utilizes effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills when interacting with other members of the health care team or patients.
Displays courteous and conscientious behavior when working with staff and patients.
Maintains a clean work space.
Demonstrate safety issues on CPAP, BPAP, AVAP units.
Work Schedule: Rotating 8-12 hour shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays, as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor.
Licensure: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
Credential: Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT.
Grade Determinations:
Registered Respiratory Therapist, GS-11.
Experience, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have:
One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level.
Hold an active license and RRT credential.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs:
Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
Skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities.
Skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management.
Preferred Experience: 1 year Registered Respiratory Therapist experience

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11.
