This position is located within the Environment Management Service at the Roseburg VA Health Care System in North Bend, Oregon with primarily responsible for the removal, disposal, and preparation for transportation of regulated medical waste (RMW) and other contaminated waste generated by the facility assigned. Uses specialized knowledge of regulations, including handling, storing, and shipping of regulated medical waste and other contaminated medical waste generated by a medical center.

Duties

Picks up and removes regulated medical waste from all areas of the assigned medical facility; Assures that all waste materials are properly contained; Transports RMW to the medical facility medical waste holding/collection area for future disposal by licensed contractor; Maintains routine documentation as required; Replaces and exchanges full sharps containers when the need arises within the medical center; Cleans up antineoplastic (chemotherapy drug) and other regulated medical waste items if the need arises during collection or transport; Uses various housekeeping supplies, materials, equipment and techniques in the cleaning and maintenance of waste handling equipment; Transports general refuse, regulated medical waste and recycling to central collection areas; Performs floor maintenance, wall washing; Cleans doors, doorframes, baseboard corners and edges, and stairwells; Tasks are accomplished by sweeping, dust mopping, damp and wet mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing, buffing, vacuuming, and extracting carpets and runners, spot cleaning areas, and high and low dusting; Adjusts, cleans, and performs minor maintenance on this equipment and changes attachments for their proper use in achieving the best results; Cleans rest rooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms, ensuring that they are cleaned and meet acceptable standards; Keeps appropriate documentation and records of contracted service waste manifest in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT); Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must be physically able in body and mind to perform repeated body movements that include, but are not limited to reaching, lifting/lowering, bending, stooping, walking, pushing, etc. May be required to climb stairs and use a ladder-type device to perform some duties. Exerts very physical effort in doing such tasks as frequently lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds. WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors; works outside in all types of weather. Inside, areas may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. Tools, equipment, and tasks involved frequently require special care to avoid serious injuries. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
