This position is located in the Railroad Operations Division at Steamtown National Historic Site. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as required by FRA CFR 49 Part 219. The purpose of the position is to support a wide range of railroad operational and mechanical duties.
Duties
Knowledge of FRA procedures and regulations regarding the inspection and maintenance or locomotives and railroad rolling stock.
Knowledge of and experience in railroad operational and safety rules regarding signaling, radio communications, switching, mainline authority, movement of equipment, steam boiler operation, and air brake operations.
Knowledge of steam boiler operations, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and emergency procedures.
Performs duties such as filling of locomotive water tanks/tender from standpipes/tanks, firing of locomotive, typically involving the hand shoveling of coal from tender to firebox.
Responsible for maintaining of adequate steam pressure and water level, involving reading of gauges and the operation of controls associated with the fireman's duties and operating the train brake under the supervision of the engineer or in emergency situations.
CAREER SEASONAL Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately February through December, and you will be in a non-pay status from 01/01/2024 to 02/01/2024.

SCREEN OUT: Have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of a Locomotive Fireman, WG-5701-09 without more than normal supervison. This experience is defined as: 1) Qualified on passenger service as a trainmen, conductor and fireman with comprehensive knowledge of both modern and historical equipment. 2) Performed fireman duties on Steam Locomotives during mainline passenger trips, yard and special events. 3) Have in depth knowledge of switching railroad cars, inspections and FRA CFR 49 rules. 4) Performed preventative repairs to rolling stock and locomotives, conducted job briefings, copied track warrants maintained engine fire with precision and detail. 5) Well versed in FRA, NPS and NORAC operating rules and regulations. 6) Trained subordinate volunteers and employees to become trainmen, conductors, and fireman.
