These Temporary positions, NTE 1039 hours, are located in Indiana Dunes National Park. EOD is usually April/May but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Duties

Positions will be filled at either the GS-5, GS-6, and/or GS-7 level, depending upon selectee's qualifications and park funding availability. All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions have no known promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade, you must indicate what grade levels you want to be considered for. For the GS-5: The technician position will work for the Resource Management (Natural) Division of Indiana Dunes National Park. The primary duties of the position include assisting with ecological resource management project implementation. The technician will monitor vegetation, survey for oak wilt disease, collect and send samples for laboratory analysis, record project data, and map worksites using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Duties may also include efforts to control oak wilt disease and invasive plants requiring herbicide application as well as operation and maintenance of equipment and carrying supplies weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain. The technician may implement established natural resource management projects and assist in the preparation of reports and plans. Work will be both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may be conducted in a variety of upland and wetland habitats under varying weather conditions and will involve strenuous manual labor as well as exposure to biting insects and poisonous plants. For the GS-6: The technician position will work for the Resource Management (Natural) Division of Indiana Dunes National Park. The primary duties of the position include assisting with the organization of project data for ecological resource management project implementation. The technician will monitor vegetation, survey for oak wilt disease, collect and send samples for laboratory analysis, record project data, and map worksites using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Duties may also include efforts to control oak wilt disease and invasive plants requiring herbicide application as well as operation and maintenance of equipment and carrying supplies weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain. The technician may implement established natural resource management projects and assist in the preparation of reports and plans. Work will be both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may be conducted in a variety of upland and wetland habitats under varying weather conditions and will involve strenuous manual labor as well as exposure to biting insects and poisonous plants. For the GS-7: The technician position will work for the Resource Management (Natural) Division of Indiana Dunes National Park. The primary duties of the position include assisting with ecological resource management project implementation, and supervising field staff. The technician will monitor vegetation, survey for oak wilt disease, collect and send samples for laboratory analysis, record and maintain project data, and map worksites using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The technician will also train, lead, and supervise staff, interns, and/or volunteers conducting ecological resource management fieldwork, including but not limited to plant and plant disease identification, data collection, sample collection, mapping, and tool and equipment use and maintenance. Duties may also include efforts to control oak wilt disease and invasive plants requiring herbicide application as well as operation and maintenance of equipment and carrying supplies weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain. The technician may organize, schedule, and execute a variety of established natural resource management projects, ensure adequate quality control of data, and prepare draft project reports. Work will be both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may be conducted in a variety of upland and wetland habitats under varying weather conditions and will involve strenuous manual labor as well as exposure to biting insects and poisonous plants.

Requirements

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/23/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four (4) year course of study (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, etc. At least six (6) semester hours were directly related to this position (i.e., plant taxonomy, botany, forestry, plant ecology, etc.). Must provide transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only education exceeding the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience. Must provide transcripts. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: organizing program data and information; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. Must provide transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as a project lead to implement ecological resource surveys and management; organizing program data and information; applying/performing a variety of manual, mechanical, and chemical methods to manage forest health threats; performing basic vegetation inventories, studies, and surveys; and participating in vegetation management through seed collection, planting, propagating, and weeding. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Note: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Internships not completed as a part of your educational curriculum, and recorded on your transcript, will not be considered qualifying as education. However, it may be considered qualifying for specialized education. Must provide transcripts. Must include start/end dates and hours worked per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.
