This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Duties
The major duties of the Biological Science Technician position include, but are not limited to the following:
Conduct and provide training and leadership to youth teams and biological science technicians at the GS-04 and GS-05 levels in ecological restoration fieldwork. Fieldwork will include invasive plant control and native plant augmentation in both upland and wetland habitats, as well as water quality/laboratory work under the guidance of permanent natural resource specialists. The incumbent must have exceptional communication and organization skills, as they will be working closely with the park's natural resource management team in coordinating the work of up to 15 individuals on several large-scale natural resource management projects. Restoration activities will include chemical and mechanical treatment of invasive plants, plant identification, data collection with GPS units, maintaining outdoor native plant propagation facilities, seed collection, native plant propagation, water quality data collection, and laboratory work. Experience in use and maintenance of chainsaws, brush cutters, backpack sprayers, hand tools, operating ATV/UTV, skid steer loader, and experience in a laboratory setting are desired.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at last one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: serving as a project lead to implement exotic plant control efforts; analyzing and providing botanical data for long-term planning efforts; conducting botanical surveys to be used in environmental assessments; developing site restoration plans. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Internships not completed as a part of your educational curriculum, and recorded on your transcript, will not be considered qualifying as education. However, it may be considered qualifying for specialized education. You must include start/end dates and hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as botany, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, etc. NOTE: Graduate level internships must be documented on transcripts to be considered. If you are claiming qualifications based on graduate education or internship, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts (we recommend you submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts).

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include start/end dates and hours per week worked. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
