This announcement is to fill multiple Propulsion System Engineer or Propulsion Discipline Engineer positions within the Propulsion Systems Department. As a Propulsion System Engineer or Propulsion Discipline Engineer in the Propulsion Systems Department, you will lead a cross-discipline team of highly skilled engineers involved in the design, analysis, and/or test and operations of propulsion components and/or systems.

Duties

Lead a cross-discipline engineering team tasked with insight and inline collaboration efforts focused on development of a propulsion system or subsystem. Build strong working relationships with external partners to enable effective exchange of technical information among government and partner engineering teams. Develop technical insight strategies and execute government review functions to support completion of major project review milestones. Communicate technical issues to the Chief Engineer, Project Manager, and Propulsion Systems Department management as needed, and identify any resources necessary for issue resolution. Identify engineering resources required for effective engineering insight and coordinate allocations between project management and Propulsion Systems Department management. Manage technical risk of propulsion system developments through risk identification, risk communication to the Project leadership, and development of risk mitigation strategies. Requirements

  • Current Federal employees must meet qualifications, time in grade, and 90 days after competitive appointment requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
  • If the individual selected is currently at the GS-14 grade level, they will be detailed at their current grade and step. If the individual is a current GS-13 they will be temporarily promoted to the GS-14 level.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Providing technical guidance to an engineering team for the development and/or analysis of a propulsion system and/or component may include (engine systems, main propulsion systems, cryogenic fluid management systems, solid motors and/or systems, advanced propulsion technologies and/or systems etc.); Managing technical risk to the development of a propulsion system or component through the identification of a risk and proposing solutions for risk mitigation; Coordinating with necessary teams to address engineering issues and recommending technical solutions. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
