You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST in the OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT of NAVAL ICE CENTER. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the Department of Defense.

Duties

You will analyze satellite imagery, model data, and in-situ data to provide quality ice analyses, forecasts, quality control products. You will provide training and briefings to internal and external audiences. You will participate in efforts to integrate novel technology, new data sources, efficient analysis procedures and product development. You will plan and conduct evaluations of new sea ice products for implementation by analysts that reduces manual analyst intervention through automation. You will provide technical guidance, mentoring, training, and knowledge sharing to fellow ice analysts.

  • You will be required to deploy aboard ships, small boats, and aircraft.

Qualifications

You must meet the following Basic Requirement:A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. or B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-11 In addition to the above Basic Requirement, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Analyzing satellite imagery, model data, and in-situ data to provide quality ice analyses, forecasts and/or quality control; Interpreting visible infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and passive microwave sensor data to identify select environmental features; Utilizing imagery sources to produce analyses and forecasts; and Planning and coordinating the validation of in-house analysis and forecast products to determine confidence levels and accuracy. GS-09 In addition to the above Basic Requirement, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Interpreting remote sensing data to analyze and evaluate environmental conditions to produce operational information products. Utilizing knowledge of remotely sensed imagery application, the principles of geography, oceanography, meteorology and climatology. Meeting set deadlines in order to disseminate scientific information products in a timely manner that meets customer and organizational requirements. GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
GS-09: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR master's or equivalent graduate degree

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
