You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST in the Operations Department, National/Naval Ice Center of NAVAL ICE CENTER.
Duties
You will deploy onboard ships, aircraft, and field operations to provide navigation and routing recommendations, probability of hazards, and outlooks pertaining to sea ice.
You will produce ice analyses and forecasts for the Arctic, Antarctic, Great Lakes, and U.S. Northeastern coastline.
You will analyze and interpret multiple data sources to produce high quality ice analyses and ice forecasts in digital or message format using World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standardized meteorological symbology.
You will plan and conduct evaluations of new sea ice products for implementation by analysts that reduces manual analyst intervention through automation.
You will provide technical guidance, mentoring, training, and knowledge sharing to fellow ice analysts.
Requirements

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- This position is eligible for part time, substantial or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
- The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including night, weekends, holidays, or on an ?on call? basis, necessary to meet ashore or afloat mission requirements.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Performing standardized analysis and manipulation of data using GIS to answer user questions regarding sea ice parameters;
Utilizing geographical information systems (GIS) to display data sources;
Demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of the principles of geography, oceanography, meteorology and climatology; and
Maintaining accuracy and timeline expectations and provide reliable data to more efficiently produce current and future ice products.

Education
Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess
Basic Requirements:
- Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:
GS-09: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR master's or equivalent graduate degree
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
