As a Vehicle Systems Engineer for the Launch Services Program (LSP), you will be responsible for the overall launch vehicle processing, checkout and assessments to determine readiness for NASA missions.

Duties

Maintains insight of design and modification of commercial launch vehicle fleet including the launch service providers’ current processes and practices. Leads an assigned technical review team for launch vehicle manufacturing and engineering reviews. Participates in Launch Services Program mission integration including technical oversight of contractors and performing the evaluation of contract proposals, and assessment of the modifications to the launch vehicle being utilized on NASA missions. Applies a systems engineering approach to the review of as-built hardware and software compliance with the launch vehicle design requirements. Acts as project engineer for special projects, and as program representative for cross-program teams. Establishes and initiates trade studies necessary to refine launch vehicle requirements and their implementation. Provides recommendations and assessments in support of advanced planning and leading edge launch vehicle design for future missions. Leads the integrated technical team, in support of the Office of Chief Engineer and Program management, to support vehicle processing, assure launch vehicle flight readiness, and provide launch support for assigned launch vehicle family. Serves as Assistant Chief Engineer to provide GO/NO-GO to Chief Engineer for launch. Keeps the engineering team focused on normal activities while Chief Engineer and other team members are focused and working on any current problem resolution. Communicates orally and in writing to coordinate activities with several organizations including other government agencies and industry contractors. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Leading or supporting multi-disciplined teams to perform technical assessments; Performing technical integration and systems engineering for launch vehicles; Analyzing situations, identifying problems, and probing causes to determine and support courses of corrective actions by project managers. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs

b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science

c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.


If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
